Dr V.P. Gangadharan established the first medical oncology department in Kerala at the Regional Cancer Centre at Thiruvananthapuram. His unparalleled expertise in Oncology helped him to remain unique in the highly advanced field of cancer treatment. In the year 1978 he obtained MBBS from Kottayam Medical College. He did MD in Radiopathy in the year 1984 from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. In 1989 he assumed charge as the head of the department of Medical Oncology and as the Assistant professor in RCC, Thiruvananthapuram. He had participated in the training program in bone marrow transplant in U.S and U.K with the fellowship of Cancer Institute and WHO.
Meanwhile he underwent training in bone marrow transplant in 1995 from Washington DC and in 1997 from U.K. In 1995 obtained fellowship of USA national cancer institute. WHO fellowship was granted to him in the year 1997. It is under the leadership of Dr.V.P.Gangadharan that the first blood cell transplantation took place in Kerala.Along with that the first medical oncology department started functioning in RCC under his guidance at Thiruvananthapuram. It was he who started the first blood cell transplantation unit in private-government arenas.
He started the first mobile thermo mammogram unit to detect breast cancer , Mobile radio mammogram unit and ultra sonography unit, in Kerala. Dr.V.P.Gangadharan is also the founder of Cochin Cancer Society which provides economic, physical and mental assistance to the cancer patients. Patients having economical constraints are being provided free treatment through this Society.
He authored the book ‘’Jeevithamenna Atbudam’’ and published same in the year 2004.It narrated the experiences which threw light on the shady lives of cancer patients .As a result the book was a best seller of the year.He still continues his writings in many of the news papers and magazines. He also delivered more than 60 lectures. Over 35 publications and three text books wrote about Dr VP Gangadharan’s life and his expertise in Oncology.
Dr VP Gangadharan also served as a principal investigator in 36 International Multi Centre Clinical trials.Apart from these he guided 9 post graduate research process including one in Ayurveda Music therapy.It is under his guidance training sessions are being conducted in radiotherapy and Internal Medicine in Thiruvananthapuram Regional Cancer centre.And he is the Editor of certain Publications such as Journal of Medical and paediatric oncology ,Annals of Saudi Medicine and JK Practitioner
He won the K Balakrishnan Award in 2005 for his contributions to cancer treatment.Shastraratna Award constituted by Institute of Scientific Heritage,Indira Gandhi Award of 2007 by Indira Gandhi National Foundation,Kerala Mappila Kala Academy Award in 2008,JCI India Award,Snehavani Manavamithram Award of 2009,First state Award in the year 2009,Ashraya Award,Silver Citizen Award of 2016 are some of his recognitions.
